Firefox and friends: my favorite add-ons

7 03 2008

I recently started using Mozilla Firefox , and it is already my favorite over old Internet Explorer. I found out that while Firefox and Internet Explorer are pretty similar as far as standard features go, it’s the user-created extensions that make Firefox shine because they let really let you experience the web your way. Firefox makes it easy to fully customize both the look and functionality of the browser with easy to use and download themes and add-ons.

What I want to share today are some of the add-ons that convinced me that I love Firefox. If you already have Firefox I encourage you to check these cool extensions out. If your not a Firefox user yet, perhaps the features offered by these extensions will convince you to make the switch like they did for me.

The first extension I’m going to talk about is Adblock Plus . This a great add-on that blocks all of those flashing banner ads that take up so much space on the page, take so long to load, and flash to draw your attention away from what you want to be reading. I was amazed how getting rid of those stupid ads gave me a much cleaner browsing experience. Although most of the sites I use regularly don’t have overly obtrusive ads, sites such as about.com, dictionary.com, and weather.com still have a much nicer appearance overall.

The next must-have extension that I have to share is Fast Dial. Fast Dial, similar to the Opera browser’s Speed Dial, replaces the blank page that appears whenever you open a new tab with a page that displays thumbnails of you favorite websites. Once you set up a site with Fast Dial you can open a new tab, click on its thumbnail, and you will be taken to the site. You can also use a keyboard shortcut to quickly go to one of your Fast Dial websites at any time.

My final extension for Firefox is AutoSlideshow, a new way to look at photos on the Internet. AutoSlideshow will automatically gather up all of the pictures on the page, and then you can either view a slide-show of the pictures or browse through them using thumbnails. While this add-on is not critical to your survival, the crisp, clean interface makes it so much more easy and fun to browse through picture galleries on the web.

These are the Firefox extensions that I am currently using, but since Firefox has bundles of other add-ons, I’m sure that I’ll find others that I like. I will be sure to share any other really useful ones that I discover.

Still want to stick with Internet Explorer? Well to me it seems that with the way Mozilla and the authors of these plug-ins are revolutionizing the web with so many new features, it makes Microsoft’s Internet Explorer seem very stagnant. I hope that these great extensions will give you a fresher, more enjoyable browsing experience just like they have for me. So check them out and see what you think.

I recently switched over from Internet explorer to firefox. The first thing i noticed with firefox is that there is now very less number of viruses getting into my computer when compared to IE.

Firefox is way more secure than Internet Explorer. Maybe hackers attack IE because it has a large pool of inexperienced users (since it’s what came on their computers), but that is really no excuse for being insecure. I find Firefox to just be better all around.
